DRY EYE TREATMENT
What is a dry eye?
Dry eye syndrome is a chronic and most often progressive condition that manifests itself as a lack of tears or changes in their quality. The result of these changes is insufficient eye moisture. Depending on the cause and severity, this cause usually cannot be completely eliminated by standard treatment methods. Although dry eye syndrome can occur at any age, the risk is still higher in people over 50, especially women, which is associated with hormonal changes.
Dry eye - risk factors
AGE
Although dry eye syndrome can occur at any age, the risk is still higher in people over 50 years of age.
SEX
Women of the fairer sex, ie women, have a higher risk. The reason for this is hormonal oscillations and changes, especially in the fifties and later.
LIFESTYLE
Lifestyle greatly contributes to the development of dry eye syndrome. One of the most common causes is excessive computer work and air-conditioned spaces. Namely, while working at the computer, we blink up to 5 times less often, which leads to reduced secretion of sebum from the sebaceous glands located on the eyelids. It is the fat, as an indispensable part of tears, that is responsible for the quality and stability of the tear film. Air-conditioned spaces additionally affect the increased evaporation of tears, which reduces the amount of water layer in the tear film.
Dry eye - causes
As we have already mentioned, in addition to age and gender, the conditions of modern lifestyle such as: working on computer screens, artificial lights, wearing contact lenses and air conditioning increase the possibility of dry eye syndrome.
Generally speaking, the dry eye condition is the result of a problem either due to insufficient amount of tears (hyposecretory form) or their excessive evaporation (hyperevaporative form). It is known that the vast majority of cases are caused precisely by the form of excessive evaporation of tears, mainly due to the lack of an outer lipid layer of the tear film secreted by the Meibomian glands. Dry eye treatment becomes easier with the introduction of the new Dry Eye protocol.
Dry eye - symptoms
Dry eye syndrome is most often described by patients as a feeling of:
-
dryness
-
stinging
-
annealing
-
feeling of sand
-
a feeling of a foreign body in the eyes
Dry eye can lead to feelings of fatigue and discomfort due to irritation. Depending on the degree of dryness, the symptoms of dry eye can be pain and sensitivity to light.

EXAMINATION FOR DRY EYE
The examination of dry eye at the Knezovic Eye Instituteis very different from the examination in ordinary eye clinics. Since dry eye was the topic of Dr. Knezovic's doctorate disertation, Knezovic Eye Institute is equipped with the most modern devices for diagnosing this disease.
We single out the non-invasive TBUT test where we get the so-called computer and special maps. "Temporospecial analysis of tear film". This means that we can see in real time where and when micro tearing of the tear film occurs. This diagnostic test is very important for people who want to have their diopters removed by laser.
Meibomography is a test during which we scan and image the sebaceous glands that are crucial for recovery from this disease. Without this method, the actual condition of the sebaceous glands was only a medical assumption.
How to detect dry eye?
The diagnosis is completely painless and can be completely performed in just one visit to the Knezović Polyclinic in just 30 minutes.

Is Thyroid Associated With Dry Eye Syndrome?
Thyroid diseases contribute to the development of dry eye syndrome. Sometimes this is the first symptom on the basis of which doctors suspect thyroid disease. The most common reason is retraction (withdrawal) of the eyelids and increased evaporation of tears.
Is dry eye dangerous to health?
Dry eye can be dangerous to eye health because the first barrier that prevents germs from entering the eye is weakened. Eye infections are much more common in people suffering from this disease and it is necessary to follow medical instructions to minimise the possibility of infection.
